Review From the Pew "Silver Linings Playbook" PDF Print E-mail
Silver Linings Playbook

Oscar buzz praising actors' performances this season is bandied about as often as those superlatives and blurbs from critics whose name and affiliations are miniscule and impossible to decipher.

"Silver Linings Playbook" is worthy of a few Oscar buzzes especially Jennifer Lawrence's flawless characterization of Tiffany, a troubled young woman smitten by Bradley Cooper who also exhibits bizarre behavior, with a performance no less riveting as a former teacher who lost his job, house and wife.

The film opens as Pat (Cooper) is being released from a mental facility to the custody of his mother, a marvelous Jacki Weaver before his recommended release time.  Once they arrive at their humble Philadelphia home, he is half heartedly greeted by his dad (Robert DeNiro) in a comedic role which is finally commensurate with his talent.  DeNiro is the consummate Eagles fan with more superstitions while watching them play than baseball players who refuse to change their underwear during a winning streak.  His rocky relationship with Pat is both touching and hilarious.

The humor is infectious and not at all dark considering the subject matter which, I am happy to report, is handled with deep understanding and compassion.  All the stars, including Chris Tucker, a friend of Pat's from the institution, are excellent with Ms. Lawrence giving the stellar performance of her young, incredible career. Whether jogging down the street or immersing herself to a local dance contest, the beautiful Ms. Lawrence proves herself to be worthy of a nomination of the mega prize.

Adapted to the screen from a novel by the same name, David O. Russell has written and directed the film with great humor and poignancy.

The only reservation I have with "Silver Linings" is the ending. Don't read anything into how I feel or perceive it to be. It is a highly intelligent, satisfying, well written, directed and acted film. The Weinstein Film Company has added another immensely entertaining film to its long list of hits.
